The Process

When we work together to make a shade/lamp we agree on the function, where it is going, size, shape, soft or firm shade, lining material, fitting and finally design. Embellishments can also be added and diffusers for pendant shades.

Currently I have approx 70 designs you can choose from but I can also make a design to match your own colours. I will provide a quote once I know all your specifications.

Once we have agreed on the costs a 25% deposit is required to be paid by bank transfer or by card via email. The remaining 75% is payable on completion of the order and before delivery/collection.

How do I make my shades and lamps?

I use my reference designs and draw the design onto plain white medium weight  China silk sourced from the US which is stretched on a large wooden frame.

If we are making a unique bespoke design I will provide sketches by email or WhatsApp so you can choose which design you like best.

This design is outlined using a resist through a nib and applicator bottle, then I paint the design using silk dyes, left to dry for several days. The silk is rolled in batches  between layers of newsprint and placed in a torpedo steamer to fix the painting so it can be washed for approx 4 hours.

Once the silk is fixed I wash and press it. If I am making a firm shade it is adhered to a special material. designed and engineered for lampshade manufacturing which have had many treatments including, anti-yellowing, anti-static, UV stabilisation and fire resistance.

The rings are glued in place and the shade or lamp left to set for a few days and any embellishments added.

A pair of shades which  have had a complimentary fringing added to the shades.
This shade is 60cm in diameter and 40cm deep (incl fringe)

If I am making a soft shade that is sewn using traditional lampshade making techniques onto the frame and embellishments added at this stage, the whole shade is then sprayed to make it fire retardant.

The shade/lamp is carefully packaged and sent to you. For very large pieces they must be collected from the studio or delivered in person.

Silk shades can be wiped clean with a damp sponge inside and out.

As with all textiles prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause fading.

For prolonged care of shades/ lamps I would recommend using an LED bulb.

I provide the LED bulbs with my lamps and lights.
