FAQs on lighting and lampshades

"What wattage of light bulb can I use on my bamboo or silk shades?"

40w or any LED/low energy equivalent

"How do you clean the shades?"

Hoover or wipe with a damp sponge

"Are the shades and lights fire resistant?"

Yes, they are backed with a PVC which has been tested in the Lighting Association Laboratories and has passed the glow wire test.

"What type of lamp holder will this lampshade fit?"

The frame has been designed to fit any UK fitting (Bayonet Cap B22) or European (Edison Screw E27). It comes with a clever little converter plug, enabling it to work with both fittings.

"Do you make lampshades for US fittings?"

"Do you make shades with a diffuser?"

"Do you make shades with a shade carrier?"

"Do you re-cover old shades?"

Yes, but only drum shades and only if the frame is not rusty.

"Will my silk or bamboo shades or soft furnishings fade?"

Yes. Any textile will fade on prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. The silk is steam fixed which makes it more resistant.

"How do you commission a bespoke design?"

I will have a discussion with you about your requirements, either in person, on the phone or through e-mail. An archive of previous designs is available on the website.

If you wish you can post me samples of other textiles/wallpapers to help coordinate the design. I will make you a series of designs and then send samples. You will select a sample and I will make that.

A 50% deposit is required before samples are sent.

"How do I know what size lampshade to order?"

Start by measuring the lamp base itself and making a note of the width and height

Keeping everything in proportion is vital so your lamp isn’t dwarfed by a giant shade or unbalanced by a small one.
Should you be in a dilemma when your lamp is in between two sizes of lampshade, choose the larger of the two as proportionally it sits better and distributes more light.
The perfect-sized lampshade should hide the fittings underneath without encroaching upon the lamp base itself.

Consider where you will be positioning your lamp in the room; will there be plenty of space around it, or will it be in close proximity to a wall, a piece of furniture or placed near the path of frequent footfall?
If so, it makes sense to choose one with a narrow profile and pair it with an equally narrow shade, then it’s less likely to get damaged.

"Why do you print on bamboo?"

I work very closely with a POD fabric printer in Donegal and bamboo was the fabric which I liked the most. it is also sustainable and is printed with eco dyes so is environmentally friendly.
